What Is Hijama?
Hijama is a traditional form of wet cupping. Cups create suction on the skin, and small superficial incisions are made so that a small amount of blood is drawn into the cup. It is practised in many cultures and is associated in Islamic tradition with Sunnah Hijama.
What the evidence says
Scientific research on cupping is limited and of mixed quality. Some people report relief from muscle tension or a sense of relaxation; this does not make Hijama a cure for any disease, and it should not replace medical care.
Who should be cautious
People who are pregnant, take blood thinners, have bleeding disorders, anaemia, low blood pressure, skin infections or serious illness should seek medical advice first.
